Carmel Mission

You are here Home  > Historical Buildings >  Carmel Mission

The mission was built directly adjacent to an ancient American Indian burial ground. There are several ghosts haunting the mission, including the ghost of a dog that is heard but not seen. The ghost of one of the of the original founder’s Father Serra can be seen walking around with a candle at night, and appearing inside the chapel on New Year’s Eve. The ghost of a young American Indian boy has also been seen, but little is known about him.

  1. I was here on a 4th grade trip long time ago. Never had any experience with ghost but we heard of a story that was true about the trail be hind it. And also I had a weird feeling about it

  2. I was here on a trip with my elementary school along time ago and i heard of a baby crying and when this couple that was walking the trial went up to this baby that was crying it turned into like a evil presence. (Devil or demond)

  3. I came to the mission paid my fee and walked out to the patio. Immediately I was overcome with emotion. Tears came pouring out and I was gripped with the deepest sorrow of my life. My husband and several patrons of the mission stared at me in a state of unknowing. I felt compelled to get away from them and found my self at the foot of a statue in the flower garden. I believe it was St Peter. As I finally collected my thoughts I stood up looking for my husband and caught a glimpse of him walking into the main chapel. So I hurried over and as I quickly stepped inside I was before the holy water. (I am not catholic) and as if my hand were self driven it dipped into the holy water made the symbol of the cross and I began to sob once again. I was literally grief stricken. I made my way to the front, through streaming tears I looked around. It was so beautiful and so sad.
I had noticed people saying bless you, bless you as they passed me. I felt confused and conflicted. My husband took my hand and led me to the large court yard. There the tears stopped I regained my composure and was able to keep it together through the rest of the tour.
It was the most bizarre feeling and unexplainable event I have ever had that was not an actual dream. I took a photograph of the mission from the court yard and later I painted it.
Something happened to me that day. I am still wondering and thinking about it. Seven years later.
