The 27,000 acres of tidal marshes, forest and ponds that make up this refuge are said to be haunted by a demon mule. Long ago, the beast was known to attack loggers and fishermen, so the locals hunted it and chased it to its death in quicksand. The unhappy mule’s spirit is said to still walk here.

  1. My step-dad is from this area. And today 4/2/16 my sister and I were talking about haunted places in cambridge md. Looking through Google I found that this area is known for some kind of haunting. The reason I am writing this, is because about 12 years ago on a visit to see my family who lives right in this area. I saw a pair of red eyes late at night on one of that back roads that’s goes through the swamp area. It looked to be some kind of demon I thought. Something like a horse or a mule. I was not sure but it surly freaked me out. I told my mom about it and she tells me this area gives her weird vibes too. We’ll today I found out about this story of the angry mule, and instantly I remember when I saw the red eyes in the tree area… so crazy.
