Ybor Factory Building - Ybor Square

You are here Home  > Restaurants and Bars >  Ybor Factory Building - Ybor Square

This factory was built in 1886 by Vicente Martinez-Ybor – at the time it was the largest cigar-factory in the world. It changed hands a number of times through the 1950s, but always remained in the cigar business, until it became Ybor Square in the 1970s. Now it is primarily office space and restaurants. But to this day, workers in the building swear they can hear ghostly voices speaking in Spanish.

Note: in 2010 the entire complex was purchased by the Church of Scientology.

  1. Its been 41 years since I sat foot in this building but the feelings which I had while shopping in it has never left me. I was shopping with my Mother, and though Mom’s drawn to the more modern day stuff (believe me back then it was modern today her old furniture is major retro), I’m drawn to history and books.I loved to read back then (and still do) and as Mom says “want to find her go look in her room, she’s reading. Seems she always has a book in her hand.” As we were looking through the books, I felt as though someone was watching, guiding my search. I’m glad that they were- for we found a book written in the early to mid 1900s, hard covered colored green. But this best surprise – a letter from the author to the owner of the book who had now passed. Unfortunately, I left that book with my parents in 1988, for safekeeping, between their move to North Carolina in 92 and then on to Texas in 97 they lost that book.
Remember folks- sometimes those who have gone before us will and do return not to harm, but to actually help.
