At Winona State College, two halls are rumored to be haunted. On Lourdes Hall’s 3rd floor, posters and pictures have been moved or taken off the wall, doors close and lock on their own, and voices can be heard when no one is there. On the 4th floor, which was once an infirmary for nuns, witnesses describe many of the souls who died there wandering, crying or talking. And at Richards Hall, one room is believed to be haunted by a former student who hanged himself in his closet in 1978.

  1. The kitchen in Lourdes Hall is also said to be haunted. I don’t know any details and the staff there say they have experienced no unusual activities. The ghost is said to be that of a nun who ran the kitchen years ago. I have worked in that kitchen and experienced nothing unusual. Lourdes Hall is not on the main Winona State campus. It is on the former College of St, Theresa campus. St. Theresa’s was a women’s college that specialized in in nursing and teaching programs. It closed some time between the late 80s and early 90s. Here is a link to an article about the hauntings from the WSU campus newspaper. http://thewinonan.winonastateu.com/uncovering-the-lourdes-behind-the-legends/

  2. I lived in Lourdes Hall in 1988, it was still owned by St Theresa College, and WSU was renting out the dorms. Our room was located near the ancient elevator that had a metal screen you would close, then the doors would close. That damn elevator would run at night without anyone in it. You could hear footsteps going in, and out of it. as well as footsteps in the hall, nobody would be there. It was a very, very creepy building. I always had the feeling of being watched from the windows.

  3. I lived in Lourdes Hall on the 3rd floor near the elevator in the early 2000s. I had a picture of Jesus hanging on the wall, and there was a night it flew off my wall and ended up face down in the middle of my room on the floor. There were other times when things would unplug themselves in my room, once everything came unplugged at the same time with me in the room, but not my neighbors room. I always had pipes knocking, which isn’t in itself uncommon, but I remember one night in particular it drove me nuts and I yelled “Could you at least stop until I’m asleep” and it literally stopped immediately.

  4. I heard a ghost story of some man who hung himself in the closet of his room 218 in richards hall, it is said the boy still lurks in the halls.
