The Patio Restaurant on 21st Street close to the downtown area of Vero Beach was built in the 1930s by Waldo Sexton and was leased as one of the original Howard Johnson’s ice cream parlors. Later it was used as a gift shop/fruit stand and as the location of Waldo’s real estate office.
There have been several instances of it being haunted. Every time a restaurant tries to use the building, they go out of business. Rumor says it that the cause of the mysterious loss of business is caused by the ghost of Waldo Sexton’s wife, Clara. Some people have felt a mysterious presence in the room, but when they look, no one is there. Others have heard strange noises, but still saw nothing.
Why would Clara have chosen this building to haunt? Perhaps she felt a longing to be there because it reminded her of her husband, Waldo. Or perhaps there is a certain aspect of the building that she liked. Whatever the reason, it looks like she won’t be moving soon.

My husband and I went there for our anniversary (October 31st). We were going to be seated in the area just beyond the front room.
I noticed a man standing in the corner with his arms folded over his chest just observing (staring at) the patrons. He was somewhat translucent.
I didn’t feel comfortable in that room, so we asked to be moved into another. My daughter was a hostess there many years ago and has many stories she could tell you.
