Squire's Castle

You are here Home  > Historical Buildings >  Squire's Castle

Squire’s Castle is only a shell of a castle built in the 1890s by Feargus B. Squire. It was meant to be the gatekeeper’s house for his future country estate, never built. Now Squire’s Castle is open to the public, and it is said to be haunted by Squire’s wife Rebecca who, according to local legend, fell and broke her neck in the castle. Actually, Rebecca died in Wickliffe, Ohio, in 1929.

  1. Located in the Chagrin Falls, Ohio area of the MetroParks Emerald Necklace series of county-run parks,”Squire’s Castle” is actually a misnomer. The building was erected as a gatekeeper’s house and is much smaller than your average mansion. Many stories are told of this location but most are the result of young men trying to get young women to snuggle closer to them on many a moon-lit evening. Records are not clear on whether or not it was ever actually inhabited as the original builder never did have his mansion built or even lived on the grounds. The restored building is now used as the sight of marriages and as the backdrop for photos on personal eventful days.
