Old Clay County Jail

You are here Home  > Historical Buildings >  Old Clay County Jail

This is one of the oldest jails in Florida (though it hasn’t been used as a jail since 1972). At least five hangings took place on the front steps of this jail, and it is believed that some of the unusual activity that takes place there now may be a result of those deaths. Voices and footsteps are heard, cell doors creak and clang on their own, and unseen hands like to touch visitors.

The building now houses the Clay County Archives, but the locals are happy to accommodate paranormal research teams (only if you call in advance – 904.371.0027)

    1. Our team has been here numerous times. Never been let down, you hear the heavy rusted cell doors creaking at times when no one is there to do that. We have heard noises that cannot be explained in the jail as well. Great place to investigate.

    2. I went in just to tour it.. it was daylight out! I was probably 15 or so and me and my father went in after we left the museum. I stopped at the front to grab some brochures and felt some one grab my shoulder but when i turned around my dad wasnt there. He had walked off with the tour guide. Then we went to the bottom floor cells and as we went to leave one of the cell doors creaked and shut itself! Very creepy but awesome place!

    3. I used to drive by this place all the time when I was little and ive never heard of it being haunted until now this is on my bucket list to go ghost hunting
