Built in 1918, the Mantorville Opera House building has been a club, a speakeasy, a silent movie house, a skating rink, a city hall and a civic center. It is believed to be haunted by several spirits, including former actors and entertainers and a woman who the staff nicknamed Ellen. Witnesses also have felt cold spots, seen lights turn on and off, heard the thump of cowboy boots in the second-floor hallway, and described an uneasy feeling of being watched in the basement, among other eerie occurrences.

  1. I lived in Mantorville and my Grandmother made costumes for the plays. One Sunday we went so that she could make adjustments and I used the downstairs performers restroom, when I looked in the mirror there was someone looking back and it was not an 8 year old girl (me). I booked it to my Grandma, so scared I wanted to leave.

  2. Back in hish school, I was performing in a play that we rehearsed here. One night, I was by myself in the back room, facing the stairway. I heard someone coming down the stairs and it sounded like clothing dragging along the floor as well. I heard them reach the bottom of the stairs, but there wasn’t anyone there. All the hairs on the back of my neck stood up and I felt as though I was being watched. After finally gathering up the courage, I went and looked up the stairs. Nothing. Freaked me right the heck out.

Another time, my mother in law was here with her amateur paranormal investigation group. They went to the basement and have video of something turning their flashlights on and off on command. She said she didn’t get video of much else that night because the batteries kept going dead in all the cameras and flashlights.

    This place is definitely spooky!
