Grand Union Hotel

The Grand Union Hotel, built in 1882, is home to several ghosts. Legend has it that a drunken cowhand once rode his horse into the hotel and up the main staircase before he was shot and killed by the bar manager. Phantom hoofbeats have been heard on the staircase. Another time, a food supplier noticed several folks in period costume watching him make a delivery from the room above the kitchen. When he asked about it, he learned the room was vacant. Two ladies once stayed in Room 202 and spent the night watching “beautiful blue lights” dance through their room. Many other strange occurrences have been witnessed here, from beds being suddenly unmade to a flashlight that rolled around on its own. A ghost seen in a long coat is thought to be Charles Rowe, who managed the hotel from 1891 to 1899.

  1. Yeah, I stayed there last night, very cool place. However, it is haunted. I have an service animal. He is a Douge de Bordeaux, the turner and hooch dog. Junior, that’s my dogs name, anyway he is completely fearless. But last night he was agitated and kept staring into the bathroom. He laid next to the bed staring into the bathroom and did that low growl thing that dogs sometimes do. The thing is Junior is 3 years old and I’ve never seen him do anything like this before. He eventually got back onto the bed and fell asleep next to me like he always does. At 2:30 am he woke me up he was standing up in the bed staring over me into the bathroom again, I looked over and the bathroom was growing faintly by the tub. I couldn’t make out any shapes so I flipped on the lamp and went in and checked it out, there is no light over there. When I crawled back into bed and turned the lamp back off the glow was gone. Junior continued to fidget all night and I hardly got any sleep. But all in all it was kind of cool except Junior still seems traumatized.

  2. I stayed at this place last week and definitely felt as though someone was watching me even though my room was empty. At times there seemed to be light rolling through the windows and onto the ceiling of my room, as though a car was passing but the blackout shades were completely drawn. There wasn’t anything creepy or scary, just a definite presence.

  3. We stayed there for my birthday. When we were getting ready for dinner, I looked over at my husband and wondered how a dog got in the room. I blinked and it vanished. I looked up old pictures of Shep and that was the dog I saw.
