Gaineswood Plantation

You are here Home  > Historical Buildings >  Gaineswood Plantation

No plantation is complete without stories of a ghostly haunting and this one is fairly tame by comparison. A young woman who died while visiting the plantation is said to haunt Gaineswood. angry that she was not promptly returned to her home state for burial. Her anger must not be too great however, as she mostly expresses it by playing the piano, tickling the ivories and visitor’s fancies with long-forgotten melodies.

  1. This is my family’s home. My grandmother spent her summers here when she was a child. I have visited the home several times and can tell you that there is a certain feeling you get in the cellar (where the young lady’s body was preserved until it could be transported back to Virginia) that is beyond understanding. Visiting this home has been a tradition in my family for years. It is such a part of my family’s heritage that we all cut our wedding caked with Col. Whitfield’s sword.I hope that you will read about Gaineswood in 13 Alabama Ghosts and any other publication you can get your hands on. This home is certainly the greatest achievement of my many greats grandfather Nathan Bryan Whitfield and a truly fine tribute to the majestic quality of what once was the old south.

  2. I’ve been to this house. Creepy they keep biscuits that slaves were making when they heard the war was over and they were free in the kitchen. They left the kitchen the exact same from that day. I felt like the spirits of slaves were still there
