First Presbyterian Church

You are here Home  > Miscellaneous >  First Presbyterian Church

First Presbyterian Church was built in 1841 but was burned in 1865, during the Civil War. The churce was rebuilt in its present Gothic style in 1884. Although author Thomas Wolfe’s funeral was held here, it is not his spirit who walks the halls. She is called Black Abbey, an apparition of a woman in a black dress.

  1. Yes, I have had a super natural experience here. Myself and a colleague were in the sanctuary and I snapped a photo to capture the beautiful architecture of the facility when I looked at the photo there was a woman sitting in the pews in a black dress.

  2. Rob,
This property is on CHURCH STREET in downtown Asheville. There is no way anyone could buy one of the great architecturally wonderful buildings built in the city. It would be the same if you tried to buy the Basilica of St. Laurance Catholic Church in downtown Asheville. NO WAY. These buildings were built by Asheville’s forefathers for the citizens of the future Asheville. There are plenty buildings to buy in Asheville but not our wonderful Art Deco structures. AND I DON’T THINK I AM WRONG.
