Evergreen Cemetery - Midnight Mary

Mary Hart died in 1872 and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery. The mystery that surrounds her involves the message, which some believe to contain a curse, on her pink granite tombstone:

AT HIGH NOON
JUST FROM, AND ABOUT TO RENEW
HER DAILY WORK, IN HER FULL STRENGTH OF
BODY AND MIND
MARY E. HART
HAVING FALLEN PROSTRATE:
REMAINED UNCONSCIOUS, UNTIL SHE DIED AT MIDNIGHT,
OCTOBER 15, 1872
BORN DECEMBER 16, 1824
And across the top: THE PEOPLE SHALL BE TROUBLED AT MIDNIGHT AND PASS AWAY.

But this last quote, taken by many as a curse, is actually from the Bible, Job 34:20: “In a moment shall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away: and the mighty shall be taken away without hand.”

Some local tales say Mary was accidentally buried alive, and was later dug up to reveal bloodied nails showing she had tried to free herself before suffocating to death. Others say she became a ghost hitchhiker after her death, and yet others say that she was a witch in life and those who visit the grave at midnight will come face to face with her ghost.

  1. My story was around 1971 – when, I was around 17. We were driving around in the area me and my 2 friends around midnight. I have visited her grave before at midnight with friends to see if she was actually going to be there. My two friends at that time, didn’t know much about her but have heard some stories . I probably knew a few more stories about Mary from my younger days, from others. As the story continues, we drove by the cemetery that night, and saw a woman dressed in black with black hair, hitchhiking. We stopped top pick her up.she was a pretty women and was more on the pale side. After talking for a while, I ask her what her name was she said it was Mary Hart. That put a slight chill down my back when She said that her name was Mary Hart, I think my two friends started to feel a little uneasy as well. Well, i replied saying my name was Cosmo. She said without a blink, “I Know”. Even though I still had the chills down my back I said to her I didn’t believe that her name was Mary Hart. Anyway I somehow found myself telling her to prove it, or something to that effect She said lets go into the cemetery and she will show me something. I am not sure exactly sure what I said, but my friends dropped me off with her at the cemetery in front of where the grave is. I recall the fence had a missing bar, just wide enough to fit one person through. So there, I was standing outside the cemetery with the person who called herself Mary Hart. Anyway, as the story goes, she told me to go into the cemetery first and she would be right behind me. I said to her, you go first and I will follow. She really insisted that I go first. I said no, I said you go first or else, I am not going in. Well I ended saying, I am not going in now, and she was very disappointed, I can see it on her face. So by that time my friends came back with the van and, I said to her we need to go. She got back in with me, at that time my friends were a little spooked and wanted to leave. She ask me if I had a car, and if I did, I should go get my car and come back and meet her at the cemetery. I think at that time, I decided that this game may not turn out the way, I wanted it.. I said I, was not interested and we needed to get back. She then said to drop her off back were we picked her up, in front of the cemetery. After we dropped her off, and drove away. I recall turning around to look and I didn’t see her there. That’s when I knew this could have been either a ghost of Mary Hart or someone just trying to spook us that night…. Even though to this day,I don’t really believe in ghosts, but I can t explain why she wasn’t there when I turned around.. Believe it or not….
