Eleanor Island

You are here Home  > Miscellaneous >  Eleanor Island

There is a story about this mangrove island about two local men who found some human remains here around the middle of the 19th century. Thinking it might be part of an Indian burial mound, they dug around looking for hidden treasures. Alas for them, all they found were broken pottery shards and more bones.

Ever since that day some locals believe the desecration of that burial ground has caused strange green lights to appear all around the island at dark.

The island is now a bird sanctuary, and human contact is strictly forbidden. Any investigation of the phenomenon must be from the water, and at a distance.

  1. I grew up on the water there and spent time crawling through that island to find the “lake” in the center. My father had told stories about building a fort on the island as a kid. Never saw anything paranormal, but did see what looked like drug smugglers. Of course, I was a kid and everyone was a pirate on the water to me.
This area could be the site of first contact between the Spaniards and the Indians though. Check the chart room at the Tampa Bay Museum.

    • A few years ago a speed boat crashed head on into the island gouging out a path about 50 yards into the island. I followed that newly created path to hike to the lake in the middle. Along the way I found several old bottles amd jars, including a Clorox bleach bottle I was able to date to 1942 by its unique design. The lake was orange with a dead zone ring about 10 yards wide around it. Very putrid smelling too.

  2. A local deputy told me that someone had attempted to establish a “residence” there one time, lol. Wasn’t be that scary or unpleasant for him I guess.
