Creve Coeur Park has a legend from the 1800s about the beautiful daughter of a Native-American chief who married a warrior. When he died on a hunting trip, the heartbroken woman jumped from the high cliff and died in the waters below. Her ghost is said to be heard crying, and her apparition has been seen on full moon nights. Sometimes the ghost re-creates her death by jumping off the cliff, then disappears. Incidentally, Creve Coeur is French for “broken heart.”
