Charles Island

You are here Home  > Miscellaneous >  Charles Island

Well-known pirate Captain William Kidd visited here in 1699, and legend has it that he hid a portion of his treasure on the island, some say beneath a giant boulder called Hog Rock. He is said to have laid a curse on anyone who went looking for it. The island is also said to have been cursed by the Paugussett tribe, who were peeved when European settlers took up residence here, as the Native Americans believed the island was a sacred home of the spirits. Treasure seekers come here anyway, although the only thing that has been found has been of the paranormal ilk: glowing ghosts, disembodied voices and strange noises. The island is now part of Silver Sands State Park, which also includes a nature preserve.

    1. DO NOT CAMP OUT THERE!!!

      1. It’s illegal, so that’s a big one. Get caught, you’re screwed.

      2. You won’t get ANY sleep. It’s quite peaceful during the day, but NOT at night. You’d think you’d only hear the wind. Footsteps, voices, I felt a hand on my shoulder. I don’t scare at all, it was just too active for the other two with me and I couldn’t stand them freaking out ALL night.

    2. I use to live in Milford and spent a lot of time here on Charles Island. It is very peaceful during the day, but a night it is a much different story, all kinds of noises, voices, growls, even mysterious lights. You always feel like you are being watched and felt like a hand touches you quite often.
