Banff Springs Hotel

You are here Home  > Hotels and Inns >  Banff Springs Hotel

The 1880s Banff Springs Hotel is grandly magnificent, and still in operation. It doesn’t only house living guests, though. Some say its ghosts include a 1932 bride who tripped on her gown and broke her neck on the stairs on her wedding day. She appears dancing alone in the dining room, and then she bursts into flames. A spectral bellhop named Sam MacAuley died in 1976 just after announcing his retirement, but apparently he never retired. His ghost appears in uniform, assisting guests. Also seen are a headless bagpiper and a ghostly bartender who tells customers that they’ve drunk too much and need to go sleep it off.

  1. We were guests about 15 years ago . We were there for the Mississippi Trucking Convention . Our room was on the 3rd floor with an empty store room or something next to it . Our camera was missing on our last night there and we reported it after much searching . We packed up that night and had our bags loaded into our car for the next morning . When we got ready to leave the next morning we did a quick sweep to see if we had left anything . To our s uprising , the camera was in a drawer that had been emptied and packed up the night before . Very strange .it had shown up sometime between 11:00 and 4:30 that night .

  2. I worked as an elevator operator at the Banff Springs Hotel in 1976-77 (back then it was a manual elevator that you “drove” and also manually opened the cage to let people in and out). Sometimes I worked the front elevators used by guests and sometimes the freight elevators used only by staff. I believe it was only the freight elevators that went to two possibly three additional floors at the top of the hotel and it was extremely rare to get a call to pick anyone up on one of these floors. I remember quite late at night responding to a call to the top floor and upon arriving finding no one physically present. I did however feel that there was some kind of presence and it scared the living life out of me. I slammed the door shut and descended with much speed. It still sends a shiver up my spine remembering the feeling of something paranormal happening.
