Achenbach Memorial Hospital

You are here Home  > Historical Buildings >  Achenbach Memorial Hospital

Reported occurrences that seem to speak for the hospital being haunted are many, including 1) The first-floor men’s room is said to always be 15-20 degrees colder than the rest of the building; 2) Witnesses describe a feeling of being watched by something unseen; 3) Bloody footprints can be seen on the floor, walls and even the ceiling of the basement, the former morgue; 4) A toilet flushes by itself in a third-floor restroom; and 5) an elevator seems to work on its own. Some say the ghost of Charlie Achenbach has been spotted here as well.

NOTE: Sources say the owner does not tolerate trespassing and will call police and prosecute intruders.

  1. Our team investigated this property about a month ago. Nothing really happened for us. Except one member of our crew became very ill on the top floor and refused to enter one room because she felt as though something was watching her. The main floor we had a couple of whistles. We also heard screaming which was later attributed to a specific breed of foxes in the area.

As for the basement/morgue…there are NO bloody prints anywhere. Someone has painted prints in pastel blues and pinks. The room is trippy based only on the psychodelic paint job on one of the walls.

Nothing captured on camera, video, or EVP. It was actually a very boring night.

Contact the Register of Deeds for contact information for the current owner.

  2. My first time going to the hardtner hospital was one to remember. I went with one of my friends. And some family members. And we were on the top floor. And I remember reading writings on the doors out loud. And there was one passage for each door. I read the first passage out loud and my friend and i heard three knocks from behind us on the staircase. Where we cam up from. But I passed it off as falling debris. So I walk down the hallway and read the second passage out loud. And we heard three knocks from down the hallway on the other side of the floor. So now. We are thinking somebody is in the building. So we make our way to the third door. And i read the passage out loud. And three knocks came from behind the door that we were at. The second time I was there. I went with some of my friends again. My mission on that night was to find the morgue in the basement. So we get to the building. And go straight in the basement. And so we finished exploring the basement. And were making our way upstairs to the main floor. And on our way up we heard what sounded like an old time clock ticking on the second floor. And we heard footsteps from up stairs with what sounded like somebody moaning. So we make our way to the second floor to find out what was making the noise. But couldn’t find anything to explain the noises we heard.

  3. I’ve been 5 times. First time nothing really happened. Second was crazy. We bought candles and places them in each floor. I was putting a candle on the main floor and my friend was down the hall and i went to talk to him. All of a sudden we hear something smash into the wall. We turn around and the candle is gone and we go back and it was smashed against the wall like someone there it. In the stair case with Tin we heard banging. I thought it was my friends outside messing with us. So i yelled “Cut it out!” and right after that 3 bangs on the door. My friends went in the basement and circled up and turned off our lights and held hands and my friend Taylor had scratches on his back and an upside down cross on his hand. My last time going there they wanted to play a Ouija board and i didn’t want to so i stood outside by the stair case. well the rooms still have name tags on them so they went into one and called out to that person. Half way through asking questions i heard a low growl coming up the stairs and i bolted out. The last time I went My friend Cole wanted to go for his birthday and I was the only one that knew the way around so I went with him. i got chills at the same stair case. we went to the little hospital right outside of it to the back right corner and i heard someone giggle but i ignored it. What’s weird is my friend went right to where i heard it and found a stair case with extra rooms. I just thought that was odd. When we were getting ready to leave and we were talking beside where the Tin stair case is and we stop cause we heard footsteps coming around the building. and right as it hit the corner rocks flew at us like someone kicked them. I never went back since.

  4. My family and I went with permission and we were on the 3rd floor. We were walking down the hall after we opened one of the floors and there was no one else in there, out of no where the same door slammed shut and opened. That happened 3 times. That was my 2nd time back. We want to go back to check out the morgue.
